Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial pain syndrome can be a frustrating condition. Since the condition is chronic, the pain can pop up at any time and even get worse. Luckily, there are treatment options out there. Here at Meek Chiropractic, myofascial release therapy is one of the many services we offer. Using these release techniques allows us to help you reduce your myofascial pain.

What is Myofascial Pain Syndrome?

Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic disorder that causes muscle pain. This pain is triggered when pressure is applied to sensitive areas of your muscles. Specifically, the pain is derived from your myofascial tissue, which are tissues that support your muscles.

Typically, the pain will be brought on by repetitive use and contraction of the muscles. Myofascial pain syndrome, unlike typical muscle pain, doesn’t go away. In fact, sometimes it can even get worse. There are several treatments available for those suffering from myofascial pain syndrome. One of the best treatments is myofascial release therapy.

What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial Release Therapy at Meek

Myofascial release therapy is meant to reduce tension in your muscles and loosen up the trigger points that cause the pain in the first place. Since trigger points are difficult to identify, myofascial release therapy focuses on wide areas of muscle instead of specific points.

To reduce tension, your massage therapist will massage your myofascial tissues, seeking spots that feel stiff. They will then lightly rub the stubborn areas to release tension and pain. The massage therapist will work over a broad area, moving from potential trigger points in a cycle, until the pressure is gone.

You may feel pain in areas of the body that aren’t being massaged; however, the point of myofascial release therapy is to massage the trigger points, not necessarily the origin of the pain. The tension is what’s causing the pain, not the muscle itself, and this is what your massage therapist aims to relieve.

Because myofascial pain syndrome is chronic, ongoing treatment will likely be needed.
